Plot

A woman smashes and robs something behind the protecting glass in a skyscraper. She runs all the way to the exit as she gets hunted by the security system.

She exits the skyscraper and blends into the crowds on the downtown street. She is forced to run into an alley when she hears the sound of a police siren coming towards her. It is a narrow alley, and rain drops onto those AC units above the woman. A car stops in front of the woman at the end of the alley; the driver honks the horn and opens the door. The car drives away in the rain after the door is closed.

Experience

Ping, B, and I first gathered the sound effects that can easily be picked up from our daily routines (e.g., siren, city ambient, heel sound, door opening/closing). Some of them worked well(siren, city ambient), but others, like door opening/closing, didn’t because there was too much echo involved; eventually, we decided to use the door sound from the in-class sample.

We’ve gathered 50 different sounds from both scratch and freesound.org before we imported them into Pr and started editing. We first put the ambient storm sound in and made a fine line between the indoor and outdoor parts. We added a lowpass filter to the indoor part so it would sound more mumble.

We considered putting the listeners behind the protective glass for the smashing part. To achieve that, we made the knocking sound transfer from mumble to clear. We wanted the glass-breaking moment to be clear and impactful, so we mixed different types of breaking and smashing sounds and put them on different layers simultaneously to create a heavy but rich explosion moment.

We left an open ending:

Was the woman rushed to the car, got up, and escaped?

OR

Was she running away from the car and the driver inside but failed and was forced to leave with the car?
